2018 KEEP BRITAIN TIDY NEWS RELEASE

Roeshot Hill Allotments is recognised as one of the UK’s very best green spaces

Today, a record number of parks and green spaces collect a Green Flag Award
Roeshot Hill has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme  as one of the very best in the world. The site, on the edge of Christchurch, joins other green spaces awarded recognition in the South of England. It is the only one in the area to be awarded a community award.

The allotment site is among a record-breaking 1,883 UK parks and green spaces that will today receive a prestigious Community Award– the mark of a quality park or green space.

This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.
The statutory allotment site is on the Eastern edge of the borough on the A35 Lyndhurst Rd, on land eventually scheduled for housing development. It is owned by the borough council but largely run by the allotment association with minimal council assistance. There are full, half and quarter plots for gardeners of all ages and association built raised bed plots for the disabled. There are trading huts where allotment gardeners can buy the goods necessary for all year allotment gardening and the association buys potatoes, onions and seeds in bulk for its members. Many hundreds of plants are grown from seed every year. The association maintains strong links with other allotment sites whose members make good use of our trading hut. Committee members will strim and rotavate plots for new members. There is a new cabin where members can meet at weekends in the Summer for tea, coffee and refreshments.

The Association Show will take place this year on Saturday 11th August with friendly competition, we hope, amongst plot holders with categories to suit all ages and interests.

Chairman, John Batchelor said, “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the 7th time. We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining Roeshot Hill to such a high standard.
The  association has worked very hard this year, not only in maintaining the site but to purchase, install and fit out two new sea containers to replace vandalised wooden sheds and stolen equipment. It has been very pleasing to see an increase in the number younger of young plot holders.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, with more Green Flags awarded this year than last year.”

“Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We are proud to have so many wonderful green spaces in the UK for people to enjoy, and hope that next year, we award even more flags.”
