Community Green Flag Award 2016 - Press Release
KEEP BRITAIN TIDY NEWS RELEASE
Roeshot Hill Allotments named as one of the best in Britain
More parks and green spaces than ever will be flying the Green Flag Award this year – more than 1,600 across the UK.
Roeshot Hill Allotments, Christchurch is one of the very best in the UK – and that’s official.
The allotment site is among a record-breaking 1,686 parks and green spaces that has received a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space. Of that total only 196 were community awards - as opposed to the ‘standard’ Green Flag award. Of the 196 community awards only 10 were in the south west region and across the whole country only 5 awards went to allotment groups. Very few of the awards were won by groups entering independently of local authorities as did Roeshot Hill Allotment Association.
The award, now celebrating its 20th year, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.
Roeshot Hill Allotments lie alongside the A35 on the edge of the borough and comprises over 150 full and half plots, starter plots and specially designed plots for disabled gardeners. There is a trading hut to provide allotment garden supplies for members and associate members from other allotment sites in the borough as well as a cafe which is open on Sunday mornings in the Spring and Summer months. The site is owned by Christchurch Borough Council but administered on its behalf by Roeshot Hill Allotment Association. The site is under some threat from housing development.
Chairman John Batchelor said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for fifth year running from Keep Britain Tidy.
This Award recognises and highlights that people in Christchurch are benefitting from a green space of the very highest quality.”
International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, especially as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Awards.
“All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
