Weeds

Now that the temperature is rising and the nights are not so cold, everything is growing fast!

Unfortunately the weeds are growing even faster than your crops!

If you don't deal with the weeds at the earliest opportunity you are making a lot of work for yourself through the summer.

The easiest way to deal with weeds is almost before they appear - with a hoe. Hoeing is best done when the weather is dry and sunny. The weed seedlings are cut off at the roots and the sun does the rest.

However, even hoeing in damp weather will knock them back and the soil surface will be nice and crumbly to stop the soil drying out when the sunny weather finally comes.

The saying goes that you should hoe the weeds before they appear!

You cannot do better than to run the hoe round whenever you get a moment. Leave it and you will need to get the fork out to lift the weeds out of the soil!

Whatever you do don't leave it until the soil dries out as in this area it becomes like concrete.
