Potatoes and Onions
21 February
Now that the orders for potatoes and onions have been satisfied there are a few of each available for sale on an 'Honesty' basis!
They are contained in a large black box on the table outside the Trading Hut with prices on the board beside it.
Post the money for your selection in the letterbox high up in the door of the centre container - as for the plants that will be on offer in the frames later in the season.

Fly-tipping at the end of Track 1!
21 February

Overnight between Friday and Saturday 19/20th somebody dumped some broken pots on the ground at the end of Track 1.
The security camera picked up 3 vehicles and no pedestrians during the period in question.
If this was you -
Everyone would be much happier if you removed it before someone who can identify you lets the committee and landlord know.

Seed Potato orders
14 January
If you made an order for seed potatoes through Ray at the Trading Hut I have to report there are problems with this year's orders.
We have been advised that there has been problems with the failure of some seed potato harvests.
The First Earlies affected are:-
Home Guard
Lady Christi
Red Duke of York
Foremost
The supplier is offering a replacement of 'Casablanca'.
A full refund will be available to those who prefer not to accept the alternative.
If you didn't order you seed potatoes, Ray will probably have some surplus that will be much cheaper than those you can buy elsewhere.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
2021 must get better!
Let's hope for an excellent growing season
- but -
No Working Party possible next Sunday!
3rd January 2021
Tier 4 means no Working Party yet again!
However, it doesn't take a Work Party to fill a few potholes!
If each tenant took a barrowload of the Roadstone from the heap at the end of track 3 and filled the potholes outside their plot we would have lovely smooth tracks to our plots!
On the other hand, it wouldn't take many drivers going too fast on the newly smoothed tracks to wear more potholes!
A load of Roadstone cost over £300 so there's not an endless supply!
Please drive gently, second gear is best, first is better.
If you see a neighbour driving fast please try and persuade them to slow down however you can! Then they can take the time to check out what other plotholders are growing and how!

Annual Association Subscription Due
30th December
Roeshot Hill Allotment Association subscriptions (£6) are due for renewal for 2021.
Membership of the Roeshot Hill Allotment Association gives you, apart from the benefits of the Trading Hut and site maintenance and improvements, the third party insurance all tenants need as a condition of their tenancy. If you are not a member, proof of separate insurance may be required by the landlord, Highcliffe and Walkford Parish Council. While your household insurance probably covers your personal possessions and maybe yourself, it is very unlikely to give you third party cover for your plot.
Normally you would visit the Trading Hut and pay your £6 subscription but that is not currently possible with the Covid situation. So to renew membership we have brought in a different system.
To renew your membership collect a Contact Data update form from the box outside the Trading Hut and, after completing it, post it with your sub in the letterbox in the middle container at the Trading Hut. (Cheques are preferable but cash can be accepted if secured in an envelope.)
Your membership card, with details of the gate lock code on the reverse, will be available for collection from a committee member shortly after - when you visit the site.

Entrance Closed Tues. Jan 26th
11th December
BCP have finally been persuaded by the Parish Council to repair the surface of the roadway between the Lyndhurst Rd and the gate. This land belongs to BCP.
They propose to do the work on Tuesday, January 26th next year.
Unfortunately that means they will have to close off the entrance to our site up to 11 am that day.
Those who normally visit their plot early, for instance to see to chickens, will have to make alternative arrangements.

Chicken Owners!
8th December
Have a quick look at the DEFRA website.
New regs due to Bird Flu come into effect Dec. 14th. Including, for the time being, we are not to let our chickens roam across our plots. They must stay in the covered runs.
This is to avoid them walking in wild bird faeces and infecting themselves and rest of flock.

Water - Winter turn off - Thursday 3rd December
The main water supply will be turned off on Thursday 3rd December for the winter.

Trespassing onto other plots to upcycle items!
29 November
Last week we had a real crisis!
A tenant came down to his plot to find his shed had been messed up. Someone had started emptying and dismantling it.
This was as a result of a plotholder not being careful enough when given the go ahead to have an old shed that was being replaced. He missed the replacement of the shed and, despite being advised to check, started to remove the shed from the next door plot! It was fortunate the tenant came on site before the shed had disappeared.
However, there has also been a problem with people helping themselves to items without permission from plots that they think have been vacated.
While a tenant leaving a plot may give items away, once they have given up the plot, no-one can go onto the plot without official permission.
Plotholders should remember that going on to any other plot without permission is trespass and risks the Parish Council evicting you from the site.

Potholes filled in - Thank you!
22 November
Thank you to those lovely people who have taken it upon themselves to patch up some of the potholes from the heap of roadstone in the far corner of the site. Particularly notable are Ron Clarke (#121), Ray Frampton (#146) ,Patrick Fulton (#101), Stuart Moore (#56a) and family helpers who have tackled the main entry track and round the far side.
If you have noticed potholes on your way round the site or near your plot and use a barrowload of roadstone from the pile to fill them your efforts will be very much appreciated by everyone!
Of course, those who get out of first gear as they drive to their plot should be the first to fill in the potholes they cause!

Keeping Chickens etc?
12 November
New Bird Flu Prevention Zone covering the whole of Britain!
Reports of infections all round the country - Devon, Kent, Hereford and Cheshire!
New instructions for those keeping chickens from the Government re Bird Flu Prevention.
• Ensure the areas where birds are kept are unattractive to wild birds, for example by netting ponds, and by removing wild bird food sources;
• Feed and water your birds in enclosed areas to discourage wild birds;
• Minimise movement in and out of bird enclosures;
• Clean and disinfect footwear and keep areas where birds live clean and tidy;
• Reduce any existing contamination by cleansing and disinfecting concrete areas, and fencing off wet or boggy areas.
Full post of Government notice (courtesy of Dalya) on Roeshot Plotters!
And now apparently there are reports of dead swans in the harbour!
If you find dead birds BCP recommend you leave well alone and contact DEFRA on 03459 335577.
With regard to poultry to contact AHPA on 03000 200301

Filling Potholes!
4th November
There has been a delivery of scalpings in the far corner of the site on track 3.
So - if you are worried about the potholes:-
Please use these scalpings to fill in any potholes.
With the current Covid 19 regulations, the Working Party cannot operate so we are dependant on individuals to do the work. The committee will be very pleased if tenants can help themselves in this problem - before the potholes get so big that damage is caused!

Roeshot Hill Allotments wins their 9th consecutive Green Flag Award!
15th Oct

Roeshot Hill Allotment Association celebrates as their site wins Green Flag Award.
Record-breaking year as more than 2,000 green spaces across the country get international quality mark.
Today, parks and green spaces across the country will be raising their Green Flag Award with pride in a year when millions of people have seen the value of having great quality green spaces on their doorstep.
Among them will be Roeshot Hill Allotments in Highcliffe which is raising a Green Flag Award for the 9th consecutive year.
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for their management across the United Kingdom and around the world.
Roeshot Hill Allotments is one of more than 2,000 sites across the country to collect the award for 2020.
“This is a great achievement for Roeshot Hill Allotment Association and recognises the site as a quality green space. We are extremely delighted to receive the Community Green Flag award for the 9th year. We know how important quality green spaces matter to the community and this award celebrates the commitment and dedication that goes into maintaining Roeshot Hill allotments to such a high standard. This has been a particularly challenging year for us all. However, our green space has provided us all with an opportunity for physical exercise and supports our mental well-being”, quotes David Keeton – association committee member responsible for managing the Green Flag Award.
Mark Merritt, Chairman of the association quotes, “We have held the green flag since 2012. We have approximately 250 local residents who are plot holders and the majority of these live in Christchurch. Our new owners, Highcliffe and Walkford Parish council, are a very active council and a great support to the Roeshot Hill Allotment Association.”
Commenting on Roeshot Hill Allotments success, Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton OBE said: “This year, more than ever, our parks and green spaces have been a lifeline and we know that millions of people have used them to relax, meet friends, exercise or simply escape for a short time”.

Visits from Vans Selling Machinery
18 Oct
A van has visited the site multiple times offering cheap machinery for sale.
A report on Friday to the police after the 3rd Friday visit gave a reference number 16-0271 for a grey Renault Trafic YK20 VKF.
There was a return visit on Saturday morning which was reported via 999 using the code as advised (- Traffic police were alerted.)
The security camera picked up all but one visit.
On Sunday afternoon there was another visit from the same man, this time in another vehicle, a silver Transit LM19PZZ. The witness was seen recording the registration number and got an threatening comment. Once again the police were contacted and another reference number, 18-0253, given. (First no. is the date, the second the report no. for the day.)
Please keep this up if we are visited again. The goods are probably stolen and there's a good chance they'll be tempted to return to the site to try to steal them back - even if you take them home.

The water had to be turned off Sunday pm due to a major leak by the cabin.
The repair will be done as soon as possible but may take a day or so.

Reporting problems around the site
Given that the last major incident on the site was shared more with Facebook and YouTube and the Press than it was with the committee it has become apparent that many of the minor, and major, incidents - accidents, thefts, maintenance, issues and damage etc - are not reported to the Association committee because plotholders have no easy way of doing it immediately - unless you happen to bump into a committee member.
So, to ensure that all incidents, of whatever type, are on record and available for the Association to address, a Problem Record page is now being made available for everyone to access and make entries on the RHAA website.
To access it go to the 'Members' section in the top banner of the Home page and click on 'Report a Problem' in the drop down menu. A page will then be available for you to enter your details and the details of the incident/problem/issue.
There will then be a permanent record of your post and you will get an acknowledgement when the committee has been alerted to the event/incident/situation.

Security Cameras onsite
16th Sept
As many of you will have seen as advertised on notices, security cameras have been deployed on the site. Following suggestions from the membership they were purchased to try to improve the security of the site for us all.
At present, with the gate being left open, the committee are focussing on trying to prevent fly-tipping given the reports of vehicles driving round the site. Cameras will be placed wherever they will be secure and as effective as possible and will be moved to suitable sites as necessary.
If you come across the cameras please try not to draw attention to them, obscure the view from them, or interfere with them in any way.

Bonfire Warning!
11 Sept
Today, Friday 11th September, the Parish Council received a complaint from a nearby resident about smoke from bonfires on the site.
The tenancy contract you signed for your plot specifically bans bonfires.
It is courting serious problems from the landlord with your tenancy if you light bonfires on your plot - especially if the smoke goes towards the houses.

INTRUDERS!
30 Aug
This afternoon two of our members challenged 3 teenagers who walked on to the site, picked up barrows to look authentic and visited a plot - to steal or just to sit and drink?
Being challenged and then observed they took fright and exited. They were chased but got away - but with the message that they can't wander in at leisure!
Last week we also had members trail round the site after a Luton Box van of the 'Cheaper than a skip' style. They drove out the gate when they realised they were being watched.
Our thanks to those who got involved!
We got away with it this time but only by being vigilant!
Please challenge (nicely) anyone you don't recognise or who is behaving suspiciously. (Asking them if you can help or which plot they are from usually works.)

PS. The vehicle involved was a white Luton van, SM55 GJK Quest Clearance and Services. on 17th August at 5.27 PM.
If you see it, keep an eye on it and check it is not fly-tipping! If possible ask them nicely what they are there for.
However, if it is someone you asked to come on site let us know asap - before we jump on them or report them!
PPS. The company quoted has been located and a message sent to check. If they return legitimately it has been suggested they should have an authorisation letter to show when challenged.

Anyone know someone driving a white or silver estate that looks like (or is) a Ford Maverick estate?
We urgently need to talk to the driver in case they saw something of an incident on the site back in May.

RHAA Summer Show 2020
16 August

Down on the allotments, the RHAA Summer show is the highlight of the year, an opportunity for everyone to showcase their excellent produce.
2020 will not be forgotten in a hurry, lockdown gave many of us a head start getting the plot ready early in the season, a big plus having an allotment during this time. However, the weather has been challenging with hot sunny days during April, followed by frosts in May and very dry periods over the last few weeks.
Due to the unusual circumstances, it was no surprise to anyone that the decision was taken to cancel the summer show. However, we still managed to mark the occasion with an alternative smaller show per row. A big thank you to everyone who supported this event. Although we didn’t have as many entries as a normal year, the standard of produce was exceptional.
For Prizewinners and Photos click the button |
Walking around the site it was great to see the standard of plots this year is very high and there is some exceptional produce being grown.
Thank you to all the helpers – Hugh, Ann, Steve, Doug, Julie, David and Mark who braved the inclement weather to carry out the judging, measuring and the presentation of the awards.
2021: Hopefully we will see the marquee being assembled and filled with a display of wonderful produce. The cabin open serving tea and cakes; a true social event which we have missed this year.

Vandalised Plots - Saturday 18th/19th July!
During last Saturday night (18/19 July) some plots behind the Trading Hut were vandalised with paint etc poured over crops. The attack was obviously targeted as those plots in between were left unscathed.
The police are involved and have visited the site.
This sort of incident is fortunately not common but shows we all need to be vigilant. Unhappily very little can be done by either the police or the Association or Landlord without evidence so:-
If anyone has seen anything, a stranger on site or people visiting plots others than their own, please pass the information to the Association so the police can be informed.
The best way of contacting the Association is by talking to a committee member but if there is not one around you can:-
• Put a note in the letter box in the middle door of the Trading Hut.
• Go to the website Roeshot Hill Allotment Association (rhaa.org.uk) and post on the Contact Page.
• Email 'info@rhaa.org.uk'
Please remember to identify yourself (Name, Plot No., & contact details).
Please note that the Facebook page and Roeshot Plotters are not the best way to report things to the committee. The former is designed for notices from the Committee to members (Blight warnings etc) and the latter for members to share ideas and news. Please sign up, follow or join to stay in the loop.

Is your plot clearly numbered?
18 July
Just a reminder -
the inspection of the condition of plots takes place soon.
If your plot is still not conspicuously numbered you need to do something about it - otherwise you may not get the warning about your plot or get one when your plot is well cultivated!.
There is a small stock of plaques suitable for plot numbers available FREE!

Site Water Bill through the roof!
14 July
We had a bit of a fright recently when we had a query from the landlord, Highcliffe and Walkford Parish Council, about the Water Bill for the site, which was over 3x last year's bill for May and June.
While May's bill was as a result of an accounting change, June's could only be explained by the hot weather (different from last year?)
Please be aware that water is a significant part of the expenditure on the site and if water consumption is very high and bill remains high we will possibly face an increase in rents.
Hugh Merrett, our President, manages most years on his 3 rain-filled water butts and gave us, some time ago, a set of very good hints on conserving water which are on the website. - follow this link.

Donations to the Food Bank of surplus crops
2nd July
The recent collections from the allotments to the Food Bank have been very successful. The Food Bank organisers are very grateful so we are making it into a regular thing!
On Monday and Thursday mornings donations will be collected at about 10.30am from a box outside the Trading Hut.
The box will be placed in a shady spot (under the table?) about midday the day before.
Please leave any surplus food crops you wish to donate inside the box.
Collections start on Monday 6th July - please donate from Sunday lunchtime.

Plot Inspections commence again post-Covid.
30 June
As the current Covid-19 restrictions are being slowly lifted the committee is able to restart plot inspections with the first undertaken last week. However this is on an informal basis.
Near a neglected plot?
We do feel that the sites general appearance has improved as have so many of the plots so thank you to those who have “gone the extra mile”.
However, and sadly, we have around 14 plots which have been neglected/overgrown during the last few months, if your plot is near one of these and you have knowledge of what is happening with said plot please do advise me on the email address below - or via the contact page - or by approaching a committee member.
Plot Numbers
Unfortunately the inspection team were still unable to identify certain plots as there were no plot numbers on gate or fence so please have these in place by mid July please.
Thank you
John Lack on behalf the RHAA committee
[Email info@rhaa.org.uk if you have any news of your neighbours unkempt plot.]

Intruder Alert!
25 June
There is a serious risk of unauthorised visitors this weekend, particularly overnight!
It would be a good idea to remove all valuable items from your plot as soon as possible!
Please do challenge, nicely, anyone you do not recognise on site
- perhaps by asking which is their plot.
If they don't satisfy you that they are authorised visitors, please ask them to leave and, if necessary, call the police on 999.
Arrangements have been made to see that the gate is locked at about 10:30pm but if you are leaving the site empty before then, please close and lock the gate.

Warning - First Blight warning of the year
20 June
Blightwatch have just issued a warning for Blight conditions (a Hutton period) in this area.
Keep an eye on you potatoes and tomatoes for Blight; look for brown spots on leaves and stems which will enlarge rapidly and travel down the stem to the spud if you do nothing. It spreads very quickly from plant to plant and then across the site to your neighbours. It can overwhelm the whole plant in days.
Remove infected leaves or the whole top if necessary. Leave the potatoes in the ground for at least two weeks if you want to store them - that allows the infecting spores to die off on the soil surface. However, you can lift them anyway if you want to eat them immediately.
Blightwatch is a warning system for commercial potato growers.
A 'Full' Hutton Period occurs when the following criteria are met on 2 consecutive days:-
Minimum air temperatures are at least 10°C
Relative Humidity is 90% or above for at least 6 hours
Dry weather, or (unlikely) cold nights, reduces the chance of a new infection but existing attacks continue.
This warning will be repeated at the beginning of a new warning period and will probably generate a Facebook post on the RHAA page.
Hopefully we have finally found a way to share the National Allotment Association's newsletter with you all!

'Strangers' and 'Intruders' on site and site security
3rd April

With the gate left open there is an increased concern that 'unauthorised persons' may wander onto the site. It is therefore important that plotholders engage/challenge anyone unknown!
However, it is unlikely you will know every plotholder by sight so you need to be diplomatic - in case you challenge someone who has a right to be on site.
"Can I help you?" and querying how things are growing, plot number etc will usually result in an explanation of why they are there. You might even get to know a fellow plotholder who can help you with your problems!
Asking them to leave, if you think it necessary, definitely should produce a reasonable excuse if they have one!
In the case of non-compliance, seeking support from other plotholders in the first instance, then threatening to or actually calling the police is recommended, though rarely needed.
It is up to us ALL to keep our plots, crops and tools secure!

CoronaVirus - Precautions update and changes
31 March
Further clarification has been given by our landlord, HWPC.
There is a brief notice on the gate - which is to be left open unless you think you are the last out at night.
NB Content and links may not function on mobile devices.
There is a brief notice on the gate - which is to be left open unless you think you are the last out at night.

More details are included in the HWPC notice on 'Allotment Access' which is available if you click on the button.
While the part in red is a direct instruction (and supremely sensible) you should note that this is that much of the notice is the view of the Highcliffe and Walkford Parish Council officers and is subject to interpretation.
It is up to the Police to interpret whether you may drive to the site; it is you who needs to justify to them why you are driving in. Accessing your plot for exercise (or food) is accepted, driving just may be an issue. A photograph of your plot on your phone may satisfy them. Evidence you have chickens (photo?) may be needed if you have to make two visits per day.
If you are unable to come up to your plot for some reason you are at liberty to authorise someone to maintain it.

Corona Virus - Need for Precautions!
The Highcliffe and Walkford Parish Council, our landlord, has said they will not be closing the site unless they find the regulations are not being observed.
They have sought advice from the National Allotment Association, to which we are affiliated. Their advice is available by clicking the button. |
In Summary
- Keep social distance from EVERYONE not from your home, no groups or chatting.
- Use gloves, sanitizer and hand washing to keep infection at bay. (See the gate notice.)
- Anyone self-isolating because they are in contact with someone displaying symptoms should not be on site at all.
Somebody's Rubbish!
20 March

Would the person who has left their hedge and briar cuttings in a stack behind the new heap of woodchip at the end of Track 3 please remove them!
They are in the way of the volunteers who will construct the bins for woodchip and horse litter and they will have to waste time dealing with it first.
Coronavirus/Covid-19 Update 2
19 March
We hear from the Parish Council that they have been contacted by one of the tenants worried that the allotments may be closed by them because of cross-infection by Covid-19(coronavirus).
They have reassured us that they will not do this unless instructed by Central Government.
Apparently the tenant was concerned at possible cross-infection from the use of the shared wheelbarrows and the gate!
It is felt that, if anyone is that worried by this possibility, it would be sensible if they were to carry with them the appropriate wipes at all times, both at the allotments and elsewhere and wear gloves.

Coronavirus update!
17 March
With the national advice changing almost by the minute, it has been decided that the Cabin will not now open next Sunday 22nd March as planned and will remain closed for the foreseeable future.
However, members are welcome to use the tables and chairs in front of the Cabin if they wish to meet, chat and refresh themselves.
Similarly the Trading Hut will not necessarily be open at the usual times as Ray is quite sensibly limiting his 'social contacts'. If alternative arrangements can be made we will open up showing the usual yellow flag which means 'Open' rather than the nautical 'Keep away - in quarantine'!

Last Sunday's Working Party - Thanks for all the support!
15 March
Having been rained off last month I arrived ready to proceed whatever the weather!
With showers forecast I was pleasantly surprised to find we had a record turnout! Stuart (#56) brought his trailer as well as his grandson, Dan, so, with my trailer as well, we were able to operate two teams filling potholes.
Filling the trailers from the now small heap of scalpings was a little congested but, once the trailers were full, we split up to cover the site tracks with me covering the middle track with Trevor (#63), Dalya (#62a/67), Patrick (#100a/101), and my son, and now plot assistant, Ivor. Stuart set off along the far (3rd) track with Dan (his grandson),Mark (#71a), John(#5), and Jim (#29).
The previous night's rain meant all the dips as well as the potholes formed puddles so we tried to fill just the deepest, thereby missing some probably!
At the request of the catering team (Thank you Sue, Sally and Chris) we broke off early for coffee and, of course, delicious cake. After a few minutes chatting with the other 'customers', it began to spit with rain so we set off back to work. Stuart, with a full trailer load went off with his team to Track 1 while we went to fill our trailer. It started to pour while we filled our trailer so once it was full we spent a few minutes sheltering in the car before finishing the stretch by the Trading Hut and, with the last dregs, the part of Track 1 that was still needing work.
Finishing just before midday, we had used almost all the scalpings and filled most of the potholes all round the site! Quite an achievement!
One of the reasons we were able to get all the way round was that much of the track between the gate and the Trading Hut had already been done by Tony (#84) using an RHAA wheelbarrow over the last couple of weeks. Thanks Tony!
With so many puddles hiding the potholes unfortunately we missed a few of the major ones. If you have any potholes outside your plot you would be doing your bit for the allotments if you were to spend a little time collecting some scalpings from the heap (using an RHAA wheelbarrow if appropriate) and filling them up yourself.
Just a tip! Raking the bigger stones into the middle, deepest part of the pothole and treading them into the matrix of smaller stuff means the repair lasts much longer!

Look out for pilfering!
March 10

The committee have recently received several reports of things being stolen from plots. Expensive trays, chicken feed (several times) and even a post and trellis have disappeared! It seems likely this is internal pilfering.
No-one should be going on any plot other than their own without permission, even if you think it is vacant!
Please keep a check on your neighbours' plots and challenge (nicely!) any strangers, reporting back to the committee if appropriate (email info@rhaa.org.uk).
If you have ANYTHING stolen from your plot, even if it is of little value, please report it to the police, via 101 or, probably easier and quicker, via the Dorset Police website! Our local Neighbourhood Police Officer, PC Sarah Burton, says the more reports she gets the easier it is for her to justify the time monitoring our site!
For its part, the committee is looking at purchasing cameras to monitor the site so this is official warning that we may be recording images on-site for monitoring unauthorised and illegal activity. These, however, will be destroyed unless required for further official action.
Water Turned Back On!
5 March
Not that it is terribly important just now after all the rain we've had but - the water has been turned back on for this year.
Please take care to use water wisely as it is a metered supply and the cost is reflected in your annual rental.
While the system has been checked, if you see any leaks or other problems please let the committee now asap. If there's no-one about use the Contact Page, Roeshot Hill Allotment Association or Roeshot Plotters on Facebook.

Site Security
4 March
The committee has had reports of the gate being left open and not being locked overnight.
The gate should be shut EVERY time you enter or leave the site - unless you or another colleague is in sight and able to supervise the gate.
You should also lock the gate when you leave at, or near to, sunset and you think you may be the last leaving.
Don't worry about locking anyone in; if they have paid their subs they will know the number!
This is particularly important this weekend as there is a Traveller funeral on Thursday in Purewell and that attracts the good - and the bad!

Gate padlock combination changes next Sunday 1st March
24th February
The padlock combination on the main gate will change on the 1 st of March.
The Parish Council have asked the Association to ensure tenants have appropriate Public Liability insurance.
To this end the committee have decided that the new number to the gate padlock is issued to tenants on receipt of your Association membership card which carries the Public Liability insurance which is a condition of your tenancy (via affiliation to the National Allotment Society).
It is in the interest of all of us that we are all covered by Public Liability insurance in case are unfortunate enough to suffer an 'accident' caused by another tenant.
Alternatively, if you already have personal public liability insurance covering you at the allotment, a cover note to this effect would be acceptable. The Committee on behalf of the Parish Council will be unable to make the new code available to any plot holder who is not compliant.

Gaps in hedges - infill material
19 February
In front of plot 1 there are some branches of willow that are suitable for blocking gaps in the boundary hedge along Lyndhurst Road. If there is a gap in the hedge at the end of your plot (#1-17) please feel free to take some. They are best angled across any gap at about 45 degrees.
If they are pushed into the soil there is a slight possibility - a very slight possibility - that they will root and grow to thicken the hedge even more.

Sheds broken into on the site!
7th February
There have been reports of sheds being broken into over Thursday/Friday night, especially those padlocked. So far nothing seems missing but the incident has been reported to the police who have already done a patrol round the site.
If you find your plot has been burgled the Neighbourhood Police Officer, Sarah Burton, has asked that each individual report it whether or not anything is missing. That way they know how serious the problem is and can direct the appropriate attention.
Dial 101 or use the Crime Reporting page on the Dorset Police website ("-if you give up the ghost waiting for 101 to respond.")
Use the Crime Reference number given to the committee - 552 000 19807

Rubbish dumped over the hedge!
Wednesday 8th January 2020
The Association has just had a demand from our landlord, Highcliffe and Walkford Parish Council (HWPC) (after a complaint from the neighbouring farmer) to remove a Hippo bag full of rubbish from by the hedge in the field next door at the end of one of the tracks.
It is obvious that it has been dumped over the fence from the allotments. From the contents it is clear that it is rubbish from an allotment.
This type of behaviour is just not acceptable as it affects us all, especially in our relationship with HWPC and our neighbours.
The result is that the Association, if we cannot deal with it with volunteer help, may well be forced to pay for the removal of this rubbish out of your subs.
If anyone can help with this situation please let the committee know - Ray (plot #148) is around at the Trading Hut most mornings or email 'info@RHAA.org.uk'.

A Happy New Year To You All!
7th January 2020
A Happy New Year to all plotholders!
Let's hope that the weather is kind to us, the crops grow well for us all, and you all find time to do everything you want to on your plot.
Why not experiment with something new this year! Sow something you've never sown before or pick up a strip of plants from the Trading Hut that you've not grown before!
But first remember what did well last year that you enjoyed - and grow it again!
And finally, don't forget to pay your rent AND pay your Association subscription (£6) at the Trading Hut - to get the necessary insurance cover (a tenancy requirement) and access to the Trading Hut etc.

Rent demands for next year. 29th November 2019
If you have received an invoice for next year's rent which doesn't give you the discount you previously enjoyed it's because Stour Valley Partnership, the contractor who send out the rent demands, have not got hold of all the details. If you have not been allowed the residents' discount that you previously qualified for then let them know using the contact details on the invoice.
Highcliffe and Walkford Parish Council, our new landlord, is looking into the situation.
£12 per rod is the current rate, but £9 per rod if you had already qualified for a discount.

URGENT NOTICE!
for those with plots backing on to the Lyndhurst Road
- THIS SATURDAY 23rd November!
21st November
Our landlord, Highcliffe and Walkford Parish Council (HWPC) has managed to get BCP to trim the hedge along the Lyndhurst Road. This will be done on Saturday 23rd November - THIS SATURDAY!
They plan to use a flail from the verge which will mean bits flying everywhere so we have been asked to warn tenants with plots along the road side of the site. This is what they say:-
Some glass houses appear to be positioned close to the hedge so if the tenants could be made aware of the proposed works it would be appreciated. They may wish to cover the glass houses with a tarp as protection from any potential flying debris.
If you can, please check with your neighbours to make sure they know about this.
They plan to use a flail from the verge which will mean bits flying everywhere so we have been asked to warn tenants with plots along the road side of the site. This is what they say:-

Next Year's Rent To Pay - Or Time to Give Up?
19th November
As you read this the rent demands for 2020 for your plot are being prepared ready to send out on 21st November for payment by the end of the year.
If you are finding that you are not doing enough on your plot and it's getting covered in weeds - or you aren't getting enough time to do what is needed - then now is a good time to give up.
Otherwise you may find that, having paid your rent for the year you give up part way through the year and you've wasted your money.
Should you wish to terminate your tenancy, Highcliffe and Walkford Parish Council have very limited staff and have decided that tenants should notify the Association and we will initiate the process.
Contacting the Association can be done in several ways:-
1. A letter posted through the letterbox in the middle unit of the Trading Hut.
2 A message sent from the Contact Page of the website (www.rhaa.org.uk).
3. An email to info@rhaa.org.uk.
Just to make sure there are no mistakes we will contact you by phone or email to confirm = but we will terminate the contract for you if we do not hear from you within a week.

Working Party 10th November
15th November
Last Sunday morning dawned bright but cold, however the usual team appeared ready to work on maintenance of the site facilities.
Our initial attempt to remove a tree stump from plot 90 came to an end when we didn't have an axe to cut through the roots. The plan was to bring in an axe at a later date but the committee was very pleased that Ken Ryder (#91) from next door undertook to dig out the root in the next week or so. (He's done it already!)
That meant the team, John (Taff) Ferry (#5), John Sutton (#36), Trevor Cutler (#63), Pat Fulton (#101), and later Mark Merritt (#71a), could concentrate on the potholes that have developed over the last few months. It didn't take long to fill the trailer from the heap of 'scalpings' which the Parish Council supplied and paid for.
We managed to fill the potholes from the Trading Hut round to the heap in the far corner before taking a break for refreshments.
After being suitably refreshed thanks to the Frances in the cabin we filled the trailer for the third time and dealt with the potholes along to the gate. A final trailer load was used to smooth the first track finishing a little late at nearly half past twelve.
Having laid over £100 worth of scalping and spent a morning working on the job it is important that cars observe the speed limit* and drive gently. The alternative is higher rents and subs to cover the extra cost of repairs to the track!
*The speed limit on site is 5 mph! If you are out of first gear you are almost certainly breaking it.
Why not travel slowly and spend the time checking out what other plot holders are doing on their plots - you'll get some good ideas!

Gale Damage - ?Need to check your plot?
2nd November
It blew quite a hoolie this morning and it rearranged quite a few structures.
The slideshow below picks out some of the worst. They were taken in the lull just before midday so there might be even more to sort out after this afternoon's squalls.
Pictures include the plot numbers where possible.
Check your plot and recover whatever has blown away as soon as you can.

Accessible Toilet for all!
28th Oct
Those of you who have used the rented 'Portaloo' originally supplied by Christchurch Borough Council (and currently continued by our new landlord) will be pleased to know the committee is trying to arrange a better alternative.
While we hope the HWPC will make a major contribution to the cost of purchasing a improved replacement, the committee wants to provide the very best option and is starting a fund-raising campaign to be able to fund any difference.
The first event is on 7th December at Stanpit Village Hall. Please make a note in your diary!

WARNING!
15th Sept
There have been reports of break-ins & things stolen on the site!
Take care to never leave anything of value on your plot and not even locked away.
(Locks attract thieves as they think there must be something worth stealing behind it and will smash their way in!)
If you are a victim please call the police on 111 and report it (and also let the committee know you have done so via this website contact page).
The police will probably not be able to catch the thief but with if the problem is known to them the local neighbourhood officer can make more patrols around the site and may be able to trace the culprit.

Working party next Sunday
1st September
Notices announcing next Sunday's Working Party will go up tomorrow - as we've been caught out by the early arrival of the second Sunday.
We have several plots to clear prior to letting and, as usual, there are potholes to fill.
If we can get the tractor to break off from the farm harvesting to clear the ends of tracks 1 and 3 ready for us to install bins for woodchip and horse litter, we can work on that!

Lost Thumper! Have you got it?
27 August
One of our members borrowed the middle size thumper for a while but hasn't yet returned it and it is needed elsewhere. Ray, our Trading Hut and Equipment Manager, is struggling to remember who it was! So if it was you please return it asap - or you know who it might be please have a word to remind them!

'Shocking Pink!' or 'Nice bright colour!'

It may depend on your taste but the plot is being worked well, kept tidy and productive - and that's what is important.
If you are working within the rules of your contract and doing nothing to give your neighbour cause for complaint - then you are free to grow and enjoy your plot as you wish.
It's the council who operate the rules. The Association is there to represent members interests and so will help mediate when there are issues between plotholders.

Sunday's Working Party - repairing Potholes!
15 July 2019
The delivery of 16 tons of scalping meant that the Working Party could finally do something about the potholes around the site. The usual stalwarts turned up, John Ferry (plot 8), John Rowe (plot 53a), Trevor Cutler (plot 63), and Pat Fulton (plot 100). Filling the trailer was the first and most strenuous job and we did that three times, working our way up towards the Trading Hut, then up the central track and the finally down the first track - before going for refreshments at the Cabin.
Following refreshments John Ferry and Trevor joined me in some 'overtime' to use a fourth load of scalpings to finish off the end of track one where the potholes had become very deep.
The repairs will be a bit lumpy at first until the material beds down. This will happen as cars roll over the patches.
However, the smoother tracks are NOT an invitation to drive faster. Fast driving only makes for more potholes and the pile just delivered cost over £300 so we won't get many of them.
If you are out of first gear you are probably exceeding the 5mph speed limit and in this fine weather you are also creating clouds of dust the rest of us have to breathe in.
Please drive gently and slowly - or you will be expected to join the Working Party and fill in the potholes you have helped create!

Can you help erect the Marquees for the Annual Show!
The Association is now the proud owners of some decent marquees for the Annual Show after the cheapies we previously used proved very fragile and not up to the job. However, being stronger and heavier and they are a bit more complicated so we need a team of people to set them up!
So we are appealing for volunteers to help erect them
on Thursday and Friday 8/9th August
- ready for the Show on 10th August.
We probably need about 10 people each day.
If you can help us out on those days (or just one) please let us know.
(You can volunteer to any of the committee, or at the Trading Hut, or via the 'Contact Page' on the website.)
Change of plan! If you want to volunteer tell Ray at the Trading Hut or email John Lack on john_lack@icloud.com

Care for the wildlife!
20th May

This poor little fellow was found on the site last Saturday suffering from injuries from a strimmer. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of a plotholder and the New Milton Hedgehog Rescue, he sadly died.
Please take care when clearing your plot, especially when using machinery.

Working Party Report (Second Sunday of the month)
14th April
April's Working Party was a busy affair.
Our first task was to help Sue move her shed from one plot to her new one. With the help of two of her neighbours, Steve and Peter, the gang bodily lifted it over and placed it on the waiting slab base. Hard work but a great team effort!
We then were joined by Alison and her daughter, who is doing her Duke of Edinburgh Award, and started removing the brash left from the conifer that had been felled just inside the gate. We started dragging it piecemeal to the heap at the back of the site but soon found, on the advice of our technical adviser John Ferry, that it was better to load up my trailer and 'ferry' it round in just two loads.
Thanks to Trevor, Alison and Erin, Steve and Peter, Marcus who came to help, and John Bachelor with his usual encouragement (plus one other who's name escapes me - sorry!).
Special thanks to my industrious deputy, John Ferry, who finished the job while I was chatting at Alan Ruck's farewell do.

Cheap quality plants at the Trading Hut
21st April

Here's a list of the plants that will be available from the frames outside the Trading Hut.
Plants are grown by Association volunteers so are much cheaper than next door at Stewarts - or anywhere else for that matter - but are kept to a high standard under the watchful eye of our President, Hugh Merrett.
If you missed sowing something you wanted to grow or, like me you are rubbish at growing from seed, much of what you can grow on your plot is available as well grown plants.
Keep an eye on the contents of the frame and choose what you want.
Payment is by an 'Honesty Box' arrangement - drop the money through the silver letterbox in the door of the middle container if the Trading Hut is not open.
(Among the list of items is the range of successional cauliflowers. I've just harvested the last of four varieties that have kept me supplied right through the winter - for the last three winters! So I'll be keeping an eye out for those!)

Alan Ruck's Farewell
15th April
Last Sunday we had a very low key gathering to present Alan Ruck with a token of appreciation for everything he has done for the Association. Alan didn't want a fuss so it was kept very low key.
For 15 years or so Alan had been the lynch pin of the Association. Initially, with John Campbell as chairman, he was instrumental in reviving it after a crisis. John left us to move back to Scotland some time ago but Alan has continued until the beginning of this year when he was offered a plot on the site near his home in Southbourne. The decision was made easier as the rent is less than a quarter of the undiscounted rent demanded of him by the old CBC for his plot on Roeshot.
As well as being Secretary (the last few years as acting Secretary as no-one would volunteer to take over the role when he wanted to retire) he was untiring in working at maintaining and improving the site and could often be seen wandering around decked in a visor and wielding a strimmer. While not wanting to attend the annual show, he always worked behind the scenes to make sure it was a success.
Our President, Hugh Merret presented him with something cordless to help with work in his garden and something to relax with when he's finished.
Our best wishes go with him and his wife Pauline in their endeavours on the new allotment.

Alan Ruck is Leaving Us!
30th March

You may or not know that Alan Ruck, our Secretary for many years, has final taken the plunge and resigned, moving to an allotment in Southbourne near where he lives.
He has worked tirelessly for the allotments ever since he helped revive the Association in 2006/7.
That's him, on the left, back in 2014, helping at the Trading Hut.
The committee is presenting him with a token recognising his service in a small ceremony (he hates big dos) and will give him a card signed by all those who wish to be included.
The card will be available at the Trading Hut for the next fortnight for you to sign.

Prepared for the next lot of gales?
12 March
Has the wind caused you problems on the plot? Often your plants can survive but man-made structures, sheds, greenhouses, tunnels, frames, etc, often collapse.
So you need to check your plot!
I nipped down the plot this afternoon to check how badly damaged my net tunnels were. The wind had shifted the heavy wood framing quite a few inches resulting in some joints separating and the shape becoming distorted. Checking the rest of the plot I found someone's metal net tunnel had rolled onto my collection of poles and canes which knocked the water butt against the greenhouse. I rolled the intruder away back onto the neighbour's plot but then onto the vacant plot beyond where I could nestle it against a shed sheltered from the wind.
I have no idea where it came from but it was too big to transport to the Trading Hut where:-
you can now can leave anything that turns up on our plot on or under the table at the Trading Hut.
I've already lost a panel of twinwall plastic out of my greenhouse door. I've searched downwind but can't find it. If you find it, or anything else, on your plot you now know where you can leave it to be reclaimed.

Important Notice for all Plotholders
1st March
Fees, subs and Tenancy agreements.
Checking with Ray at the Trading Hut,it is great to see that over a hundred of us have paid the 2019 RHAA subs already, [so are covered for the Public Liability insurance that we are required to have]
That means you have probably paid your Council rental too!
Christine Mockett at the Council [CMockett@christchurchandeastdorset.gov.uk] has reminded us that the tenancy agreement for our plots urgently needs to be up to date. This is the one off agreement that was sent to you when you became a plot holder or perhaps was updated a few years ago. If you haven’t signed your agreement and sent it back to the council, could you do that as soon as possible please? If you have lost it then email Christine at the above address and she will send you a copy, I'm sure!
At the handover to Walkford and Highcliffe Neighbourhood (Parish) Council, the Neighbourhood Councillors will only be as good as the information they receive.

Bulk delivery of compost stored away at the Trading Hut!
6th February

Our Chairman, John Batchelor, looks very pleased that the delivery of compost bags and gro-bags is stored away nicely after a team from the committee took delivery this morning at 8 am of over 200 bags.
Thanks to Mark Merritt, John Batchelor, Hugh Merrett and Steve Godley with direction from Ray Frampton for their hard work. Oh! And special thanks to a plotholder who saw us working and stopped by to help. Sorry but none of us had a name for you even though we know you as a stalwart helper from time to time!
Now we are ready at the Trading Hut for the spring growing rush.

Busy Working Party - Lots done!
Sunday 13th January
If you have been to your plot you will have seen that the potholes have been repaired, not so you can speed down the tracks but to protect your springs and tyres - and any delicate plants or materials you may be carrying. Please stick to the speed limit - staying in first gear is the best way, otherwise the potholes will return very quickly.
The weather was especially kind to us this Sunday when the Working Party assembled. Our chairman, John Bachelor, set to and started moving leaves from the pile on the Special Needs Plot. The rest of us went down to the heap of road stone in the far corner of the site and loaded the trailer. We filled the potholes in the middle track with two loads before taking a break for refreshments and to join the celebrations at the Cabin for the winners of the Kids Drawing competition. We were joined by John Ferry who had arrived just after we had started and took it in hand to tidy the compost bin by the gate.
Thanks to Sue Davis and her team for providing hot drinks, cake and sausage rolls for everyone.
Then, while John returned to the compost bin work, Chris Stock , Trevor Cutler, John Rowe and Pat Fulton refilled the trailer another couple of times and filled the potholes in the far track helped by the arrival of Lyndon Fennell who added some fresh muscle to the hardworking team.
We finished with some road stone left in the trailer so we helped Christchurch BC out by filling some of the potholes outside the gate. Meanwhile John Ferry had pulled the compost back into the bin just in time to allow a new delivery to fill the space he had created.
A very successful session thanks to all the help from the volunteers, all of whom have helped out in the past. New faces will be most welcome at future sessions - on the second Sunday of each month, the next being on February 10th.
The weather was especially kind to us this Sunday when the Working Party assembled. Our chairman, John Bachelor, set to and started moving leaves from the pile on the Special Needs Plot. Help your Association with next Sunday's Working Party!
for 13th January
Next Sunday, being the second in the month, is the day for the regular Working Party. December's Working Party clashed with the Mulled Wine and Mince Pies but we still managed to do finish off the Special Needs Plot raised bed repair as well as some of the potholes.
This month we want to complete filling the potholes.
If we get enough of you helping we can also tidy up the horse litter bins so the fresh deliveries can be dumped tidily.
If you have any further suggestions please use the Contact Page.
Hope to see you at the Trading Hut 10 am.
We'll finish with a hot drink and nibbles before Midday.

Seed Orders need collecting!
If you ordered seeds through the Trading Hut you best collect them as being carried to and from the Trading Hut in this wet weather does them no good!
Ray is opening the Trading Hut this Sunday, despite his Christmas preparations, just so you can collect them and keep them safe and dry at home - and start planning your 2019 sowing programme after your Christmas dinner!

Mince Pies and Mulled Wine
15th December

If you had come down to the site last Sunday morning you'd have been in for a big surprise!
Those who did joined a cheerful gathering of Roeshot Plotters enjoying free mulled wine and a selection of mince pies and other goodies provided by Kay Power, Jane Merrett and their helpers.
The Working Party, (John Batchelor our chairman, John Ferry,John Rowe, John Lack, Liz Day, Mark Merritt, and Trevor Cutler; Thanks to all) - having repaired some potholes on the entrance track and completed the work on the Special Needs plot, joined in the fun and refreshments.
Please Note:-
Unfortunately, now that the water has been cut off, the Cabin will now only open for special events and will remain closed until the water is back on.

Working Party - and Mulled Wine and Mince Pies!
1st December
Not this Sunday! - Next Sunday, the 9th
- is both the Working Party and Mulled Wine and Mince Pies at the Cabin!
So the Working Party will be short and sweet so we can all join in the fun!
We'll probably fetch a trailer load of roadstone from the heap, fill in a few potholes along the main front track and then, when we've worked up an appetite, join in!

Visit by the Mayor of Christchurch tomorrow!
19th November
Hope your plot is nice and tidy! The Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Lesley Dedman, is due to visit our allotment site tomorrow (Tuesday 20th Nov.) at 11 am. to look round the site following an invitation by your committee. Once she sees what good work we are all doing hopefully she will be an advocate for the need to retain the allotments and encourage their maintenance.
If you happen to be down there during the visit please be ready to say some nice things about your site!

Last Working Party - 14th October - Report
29th October
With the pouring rain it was not surprising that only John Ferry turned up!
In fact the rain stopped soon after we gathered so we took instructions on what needed doing to prepare the Trading Hut for painting. Between us we managed to prepare one side before retiring to the cabin for some refreshment.
Next Working Party is on 11th November so if you are not involved in Remembrance Sunday events.....!

Working Party - Last Sunday (9th September) - Update
Sunday 9th September
Another successful session with some of the regular volunteers, Trevor, Steve, John (Taff), Mark, and our Chairman John Batchelor!
We filled the raised bed with layers of the ash from the rubbish on plot 1, rotted horse litter dug out from under the main heap, followed by soil and topped off with a layer of compost.
Then, after a break for refreshments, we cleared the surplus planking from alongside the cabin.
A grand result for the morning!
The railing along the front of the cabin was left to another time as it would have disrupted the service of refreshments. John Lack and Mark Merritt plan to tackle this during the week.
Grass cutting and compost heap tidying were left for another time.
With more volunteers we could have done even more!

Once again a GREAT Annual Show!
Sunday 12th August
Thank you to everyone who supported the Annual Show and made it such a success.
Even the rain held off on Saturday until the very end. There were more entries than ever before and, thanks to some excellent organisation by Julie and David Keeton and a band of willing helpers, everything ran very smoothly.
Our judge, Mr David Bassil, an RHS judge, said the standard of exhibits would grace any show. Our Chairman, John Bachelor, announced the winners and prizes were presented by our life President, Hugh Merrett.
'Best in Show' was won by joint winners, Louise Forman and Jenny Stock, for, somewhat unusually, their excellent cup cakes.

The presentation was of the usual but rather incongruous Presentation Spade.
The 'Best Kept Plot' prize was awarded by last year's winners, Christine and Jim Covernton, to Don Hilton who has a plaque to display outside his plot #93.
During proceedings our seventh consecutive Community Green Flag Award was celebrated by all present.
Here's looking forward to another successful growing season - and next year's show!

Our Annual Show - Saturday 11th August
Sunday 29th July

Are you ready for our Annual Show? It's less than a fortnight away!
The recent weather means even the most expert growers will be struggling to produce perfect specimens!
Schedules, containing the rules for exhibiting, are available in a box outside the Trading Hut.
The tent has been tested, some really exciting raffle prizes obtained and Julie Keeton's team have made all the arrangements. What are you going to bring along? Start checking what might be worth showing.
I will be harvesting as normal over the next fortnight but then will check over what I've got and selecting the best for the show. That strategy has won me a few prizes in the past - and I'm no expert at showing! The cucumber I'm eating at the moment would have made a good specimen but was just a tad early. Perhaps I'll get another! The rain over the last few days will help!
Certainly the sunflowers I see around the site are doing well - although a few were leaning rather badly after the gales they should survive to be propped up again!
Good Luck to everyone!

We've got our 7th Community Green Flag Award!
Tuesday 17th July
We have confirmation that we have yet again been awarded the Community Green Flag Award!
Another string to our bow in the fight to keep our allotments going.
The committee is pleased that the effort to maintain this prestigious award has been successful and thanks all who have contributed to the work.
We continue to need your support and attendance at our AGM - 7pm on 27th July at Stanpit Village Hall.

Vandalism on Roeshot!
Tuesday 10th July

On Sunday we received a report of some disgusting vandalism on plot 98!
Someone has very neatly severed the trunks of two very large (6ft) sunflowers at the fence of the plot and left them lying across the front bed.
It is particularly galling as the plot was being looked after by friends of the plotholder as she is away coping with the serious illness of a family member.
We are not looking at mindless vandalism as the stems were 'carefully severed' - not just broken off! Apparently it happened over the night of Monday 2nd to Tuesday 3rd July.
The suspicion is that it was done by someone who has designs on the 'Tallest Sunflower' competition at our annual show. It would be a pity if this kind of skulduggery should spoil our annual celebratory event, especially as it is intended as a relatively low key encouragement to all plotholders, both experienced growers and beginners alike!

The scene of the crime!
The stem, which is over an inch across, has been cut straight through!
The schedule (and instructions) for the show will appear shortly and will be available outside the Trading Hut. Keep your eyes open for the arrival of the booklet - and on your crops.
(Please report any damage incidents - both to us and the police.)
Meanwhile I will be joining you in the show - IF, when I harvest, there is anything good enough to enter. Mind you, with this weather, anything that is not shrivelled up may well get a prize!

Last Sunday's Working Party
Monday 9th July
Those of you in track 1 will have noticed two piles of roadstone beside the track!
On Sunday the working party, in tremendous heat, helped transfer this material so the potholes in the track can be filled. John plot #5, Jerry #91a, Pat #101a, and Colin #45, had to break up the heap of roadstone, which was solid, before they could shovel it into the trailer for transporting to track 1. With the mounting heat it would have been silly to try and do more!
Now it is up to the plotholders along there to finish the job and fill in the potholes. They certainly needed doing as they were amongst the deepest on the site.
Trevor and Sue, plot #63, also did sterling work clearing plot 1, by the gate, moving the rubbish into a heap and cutting down weeds. Eventually we plan to make this a wild flower patch with perhaps a place to relax by our Green Flag!

Vacant Plots
19th June 2018
You will have seen a number of vacant plots around the site. Unfortunately the waiting list consists only of people wanting particular plots.
Of course, if there is a vacant plot near you that you would like to take on then you only have to ask.
On the other hand, if you know of someone who is thinking of taking up allotmenteering then encourage them to come along and see if they can make a go of it. It would be an immediate start!

Blight warning discontinued for 21st June
20th June 2018
Another warning that conditions are right for Potato and Tomato blight for 20th June.
We may be in for a spell of Hutton Alerts.
A 'Full' Hutton Period occurs when the following criteria are met on 2 consecutive days:-
Look for brown spots on leaves and stems which will enlarge rapidly and travel down the stem to the spud if you do nothing. Remove infected leaves or the whole top if necessary. Leave the potatoes in the ground for at least two weeks if you want to store them - that allows the infecting spores to die off on the soil surface. No problem if you want to consume them immediately.
This warning will be updated daily if necessary and will probably generate a Facebook post.

The cabin surround smoothed off with soil ready for grass and potholes filled in the first track. Much shovelling done!

Urgent Appeal for help on Sunday's Working Party
7th June 2018

Next Sunday (7th June) is the monthly Working Party and there is much to do!
It is short notice but we do need as much help as possible.
As well as continuing the pothole repairs as usual, we need to finish off the ground around the new decking at the Cabin ready for grassing it. The area beside the ramp needs the compacted roadstone loosening and levelling so we can spread soil for the grass to grow in.
Tools are provided but if you have a favourite shovel, fork, or even pickaxe, they would be very useful.
If that all sounds a bit too strenuous for you then Plot 1 needs some tending instead and there is always somewhere that needs clearing and tidying.
Please come along to the Trading Hut on Sunday morning at 10am.
Refreshments are on offer and we finish at midday!
RHAA Committee Update
25th May 2018
The vandalism of the wooden cabin, the purchase, fitting out, painting and work on and around the exterior of the new cabin placed a great strain on volunteers and in particular, the committee of this association.
A major policy disagreement led to the resignation of the chairman and secretary. This was followed by the resignation of two other committee members.
After much thought and mediation the chairman, secretary and one committee member agreed to withdraw their resignations and re-join the committee.
This was purely a committee matter and everyone maintained the interests of the wider membership at all times.
The Green Flag inspection visit took place as normal and we have high hopes of yet another Green Flag to keep the pressure on the borough council, should it still wish to relocate us.
The Trading Hut opened every weekend. The interior of the new cabin was completed. The cabin opened for business on Sunday mornings, pot holes were filled by volunteers and we have just completed the first plot inspection of the year. Preparations are in hand for the Association's Summer Show.
The committee has much to do over the short term. There may need to be some reorganisation of how we work.
We would welcome members offering help to the committee, particularly with the running of the association Trading Hut.
We do need a new treasurer as Julie Keeton has resigned from the committee due to pressure of work.

Intruders reported again! Please shut the gate!
Wednesday 9th May
Yesterday we had a visit from an unauthorised vehicle and driver. He was offering 'ex-exhibition' generators to plotholders he met. This is not the first time this situation has been reported.
He was too brazen and big to argue with but two plotholders were suspicious and reported him to the police.
The offending vehicle is a silver Ford transit reg. no. SF17OHN and the driver is from Dublin with a very strong Dublin accent about 5’ 11” thickset, brown hair.
He may well be 'casing the joint' ready to steal things later - or even worse, if he is a Traveller, checking for a place to bring his caravan. Our site is ideal for a stopping place with a good water supply and not overlooked. However the mess and damage that results would be huge and getting rid of them is a long and difficult process.
If the gate had been shut when he arrived he would probably have driven on somewhere else!
If you see him, or anyone like him, please contact the police at the earliest opportunity.
The Police reference number is 108:0409.
Our gatekeeper, who just happens to live opposite, reports that she has had to come across and shut the gate many times today!
Please shut the gate every time!

If you see him, or anyone like him, please contact the police at the earliest opportunity.
The Police reference number is 108:0409.
Our gatekeeper, who just happens to live opposite, reports that she has had to come across and shut the gate many times today!
Please shut the gate every time!
Potholes need filling!
Tuesday 1st May
The potholes in the tracks round the site have been horrendous in recent weeks. While they serve to slow down some of the speedier cars that don't observe the speed restriction, everyone's car suspension is at risk.
However, earlier this week we finally received a delivery of roadstone courtesy of the council. It is quite a task for one person or group to fill in all the potholes but if everyone filled in a few it wouldn't take long.
The committee is very grateful to those few who have already started the process and we would be very happy for others to join in.
Please do feel free to take barrowloads of the roadstone and fill the potholes near your plot.
It is particularly important to remove the heap next to the new cabin as it will interfere with finishing off the surroundings of the cabin if left there.
It is suggested that you only fill each pothole just slightly high as it will be firmed down by passing traffic.
Over-full potholes create a hump that is almost as uncomfortable as the original hole and is difficult to reduce. Underfilling can be easily remedied with additional roadstone.

Busy Week Ahead!
Monday 30th April
Next week is a busy week for Roeshot Hill Allotments.
On Friday 4th May we will be having our visit from the Green Flag assessor. Please can you all help by tidying up outside your plots and helping to clear up rubbish and litter round the site?
On Monday we have a delivery of Grow bags and compost round about 09.00 at the trading hut and we do need to shift sacks around in the shed and the trading hut. If you have the time we do need help with this, especially from younger and fitter plot holders.
On Monday afternoon we have a delivery of scalpings, courtesy of your local council so we can continue to fill in the holes in the road!
On another note.
The Annual General Meeting will be held on Friday 15th June, 7.00PM for 7.30 at Stanpit Village Hall
(Ed. Cancelled. Check for new date on the gate and coming shortly.)

Who can't be bothered to shut the gate?
I'm not sure who thinks they can second guess the work of the committee trying to maintain the allotment site for ALL plotholders when they scribble their personal comments on the notice of the gate reminding everyone to sit the gates!

What do they think should be done?!
Should we lock the gate or leave it wide open?
I guess they would want the latter as they are probably amongst the few who find it too inconvenient to shut the gate as they come and go.
I don't think they realise the police recommendation is to secure the premises and every time the gate is left open it is obvious how easy it is to get in to everyone passing by. It is easy for some chancer to drive straight in to 'case the joint' and/or come back later, come straight in knowing the gate is easily opened, and helping themselves to anything they want or, even worse, just wrecking the place!
Please help yourself (and everyone else) by reminding yourself (and everyone else) to close the gate!
Please shut the gate every time you come in or go out!
Latest Progress Report
Friday 30th March - WET!
As you go down the site just check out the new Cabin as you go past!
Don Hilton and his crew have painted the outside the green as required by CBC.
John Lack and Mark Merrit have been very busy inside installing the worktops. It's perhaps fortunate that the weather forecast is (as usual) very poor for the Bank Holiday weekend as, despite their efforts, it will not be ready for then - but just wait a week or two!
A Working Party on the 8th (if not before) will need to tidy up outside and perhaps deploy our new chairs. Your help will be very welcome and needed!
Please pop along at 10am Sunday. (Refreshments provided in return!)
As you drive round the site please drive slowly (5mph - 1st gear!) as the potholes are many and deep and, as well as making them worse, you may damage your suspension/wheels.
Unfortunately Christchurch BC are unable to supply the road scalpings for filling them at the moment - unless they buy in expensive new material which will make them want to push our rents up even higher!

Working Party this Sunday!
Wednesday 7th March
It may be Mother's Day but it is also the second Sunday in the month and we have the regular Working Party. We need volunteers or nothing gets done! If you can spare any time between 10am and Noon please come along.
Top of the list of jobs is work for the new cabin.
We need to dig a hole for a soakaway and lay some temporary decking down so the inside can be kept clean while it is refurbished by John Lack and his team.

On Tuesday some of you may have seen
Don Hilton with his helpers, Colin (#45) and Ken (#92a) working on preparations for painting the outside of the cabin.
They worked very hard putting in a full 7 hour day ready for giving it the green colour Christchurch BC required for Planning Permission.
We also need to fill some of the potholes.
Unfortunately when the tractor smoothed the tracks out in the autumn it disturbed all the old pothole repairs so we now have more than ever! There is a small amount of material for us to fill in the worst of them if there are enough volunteers.
4th March
Keep intruders out - Shut the gate EVERY TIME!
It has been reported that a pair of suspicious 'gentlemen' were challenged by a tenant as they drove round the site the other day but continued to drive round checking the layout etc. When they met other tenants they offered generators and other equipment - as an excuse? They obviously knew their way around and it was suggested it was not their first visit. They almost certainly drove in through an open gate.
Intruders are less likely to come in if the gate is closed!
It has been decided to cancel the 'Open Gate' arrangement on Sundays during Trading Hut opening and keep it shut Sunday mornings to eliminate confusion.
But it will only work if EVERYONE shuts the gate whenever they leave or come in - even if it is just for a short visit.
If you are out of sight of the open gate, even if only for a minute, anyone can drive straight in.
Please lock the gate if you think you may be the last to leave near to or after sunset. Don't leave it unlocked overnight, that is an open invitation to thieves and vandals.
Finally, if you unlock the gate at any time, please scramble the number immediately. Just roll your thumb over the numbers to change it. If these people see the same number more than once they know it is the combination!
PS Can't remember the number? Try thinking of it as a date - d/m/yy. Helps me, especially using the name of the month and something I remember from the year. But then I was alive that year and have memories!

New stocks at the Trading Hut

AVAILABLE NOW AT THE TRADING HUT
Onion, shallot and garlic sets for immediate planting.
Recently, a group of hardy workers took delivery of a load (5 tons) of compost and lime. After much lifting and grunting all the bags of Multipurpose compost, Horse manure compost and Lime were safely stacked in storage.
On sale now in the Trading Hut on Sundays.
Also available is our standard range of good quality gardening materials, carefully chosen to give good results. You may get something cheaper elsewhere but you wont get the quality and results anywhere at the prices we charge. We buy in bulk where possible and price to just cover our costs.

If you go down to the site today you're in for a big surprise!

As you go down to your plot today take a look at the new container that has arrived on the old cafe site.
Christchurch Borough Council have granted us planning permission and the new 'Cabin' has been installed. Our new meeting place still needs some work internally and we have to paint it CBC green externally.
Over the next few weeks John Lack and his team will transform the inside while outside will need some landscaping.
All offers of help gratefully received so we can open this new facility as soon as possible.
By the way - The plastic chairs in the background are surplus to requirements as Hoburne have donated a complete set of new ones.
Please help yourself if you want one. They will go down the tip if not found a new home.

Welcome to 2018
Have you managed a trip down to your plot this year? It's a good time to catch up with those jobs that you've been meaning to do last year but were too busy to get round to!
Rough dig that vacant patch; attack that patch of weeds; empty the compost bin and spread it where it will do some good; clear the rubbish from your shed/greenhouse ready for the growing season!
While you're at it you might want to start by sowing some Broad Beans!
If you are down on Sunday morning you can also pay for this year's Association subscription (£6).
One of the benefits of membership is the insurance that is a requirement for your tenancy - assuming you have paid this year's rent to CBC!

Happy New Year!
Time for another Working Party! - Next Sunday 14th January.
Next Sunday, the second in the month, is day for our monthly Working Party.
This time we want to:-
This time we want to:-
- Fill in some of the potholes (we only have a small amount of infill material at the moment!)
- Tidy up some of the Manure in the bins.
- Sort out the recycled pots container so we can set up a new one.
- - And, if we can get the levels sorted out beforehand, concrete the foundations for the new cabin.
Sunday's working party was the most successful to date!
As can be seen in the photo we had an excellent turnout and they achieved a huge amount. By the time we had finished there were for big holes for the new cabin container and the huge heap of rubble and soil by the track had been moved to behind the Trading Hut.
John Lack came down with his drawings and measuring tape to make sure we dug the four holes in the right places and everyone set to.
The site of the old cafe is clear! All that is left is a heap of dust and a plastic box of metal nails, hinges etc.
But please beware the holes covered by upside down tables weighted down with blocks!
Once the holes were dug we turned to the heap alongside the track. With a selection of tools and barrows and a fair amount of hard work and sweat the heap disappeared.
We await the help from the plotholder who can use his laser to put in the levels ready for us to pour in the concrete to support the container. Probably after Christmas!

If you go down to the site today you're in for a big surprise!
After a weather beaten but great fun Xmas mulled wine and mince pie gathering, the cabin we used to serve from has disappeared!
This is in preparation by the Association for the arrival of a new container as a replacement for the cabin that was broken in to earlier this year!
We have put in for planning permission and await the result. We have sourced a container which will be used as a meeting place where members can gather.
Watch for developments!
If you have an hour or so to spare Sunday morning we are digging out the foundations for the cabin and could do with a little help shifting slabs and earth to clear the site for the new container.
Meanwhile the Chairman has asked me to remind you that subs will be due in the New Year and are now £600!
I think he meant £6.00 but forgot the full stop!
The Committee wish all members a Happy Christmas and a FRUITFULL New Year!

Mulled wine and Mince Pies - Sunday 10th December
Free!

Mulled wine and mince pies are served at the cafe on Sunday morning 10th December.
Come and join with your allotment colleagues in a pre-Christmas social gathering with seasonal refreshments.
See you there!
An appeal for your help?
Simon Fuller, a teacher at Highcliffe School, has approached the Association asking if anyone would like to help them maintain the school's veg plot. This is what he says:-
'The idea is to encourage the students through the garden to understand more of the food chain, hopefully enjoy garden and what it entails and in recent years students have sold produce outside Waitrose's to raise funds for the following year.
In addition we have some less academically able or needy students who we feel the garden could benefit.
Our issue is we only have limited staff time available (it is a side of desk job for one of our science technicians) and it would be great if she could have some support to keep the garden in good shape plus knowledgeable help with the students.'
Anyone who is interested please send in a reply through the Contact page and I will pass it on.

Annual Summer Show
Thanks to everyone involved!
It was a great success thanks to all the entrants, and Julie Keeton and all her helpers.
Congratulations to every entrant. Even if you didn't win a prize our judge was very complimentary of all the entrants.
Technical problems are delaying publishing photos and details. Watch this space!

2nd August - Another email warning of Blight conditions - Keep checking!
Potato Blight arrives!
Another warning for blight arrived in my inbox today but more important, there is at least one case of blight in potatoes on Roeshot Hill Allotments.
Check your potatoes and follow the precautions if the leaves have brown spots that spread and are white-ish on the underside.
See the 'Blight' page.

Back from my 'holiday' in the American Mid-West!
Got back from visiting family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin last weekend. Built a raised bed for my son so he can start growing veg, complete with surrounding fence to keep the wildlife (rabbits and groundhogs) from eating everything.
After an energetic session on the plot Sunday morning jet-lag hit me - might get down tomorrow.
In the meantime, while catching up on Facebook, I came across this course for starting up an allotment by the National Allotment Society which may interest someone. It's cheap but unfortunately far away - at Barnsdale Gardens, Oakham, Rutland.

Summer Holidays
Unfortunately the Website manager has (rather stupidly) gone off on a long summer holiday - so there won't be much action here as I will not be in internet range for much of the time!
Fortunately I would like to thank Karl (Plot #102?) who has stepped in to monitor the Contact Page and manage the Facebook page and 'Roeshot Plotters' Group (accessible from the Facebook page).
Hope you have a good summer and the weeds don't grow too fast, if only because I don't want to have to deal with too much of a jungle when I get back in July!

New Blight warning! 2nd June
For the last four days we have had emails from the BlightWatch website warning that conditions have been right for Potato and Tomato Blight. (A "Hutton" period when humidity is above 90% and the temperature remains above 10 degrees C.)
Check the 'Potato Blight' page under the 'More' tab at the top of the page.

Adder found on the site!

A dead Adder had to be released from some netting on a plot this morning (Sunday 28th May).
It's a pity to lose a creature that helps us by eating many pests like mice and slugs etc.
If you come across one just give it a chance to slide away. It is a protected species and illegal to interfere with it.
It will be more frightened of you than you are of it! It may try freezing as a survival trick but will escape if it has a chance.
Any sightings should be reported via the blackboard at the cafe and at the Trading Hut where it will be recorded in the Incident Book to back up our argument to stay put and not be developed.
Potato & Tomato SECOND Blight Warning
Yesterday (25th) we received another email from Blight Watch telling us that it has been very good conditions for the spread of blight in the last few days. If you can earth up to cover the leaves, do so. Otherwise there is no cure.
If necessary remove affected foliage and leave harvesting potatoes to be stored for a couple of weeks to allow the fungus spores to die out on the soil. (This doesn't matter if you are going to eat them straight away.)
Don't compost diseased foliage - burn it or send it for recycling by the council.
I have again ridged my potatoes so there is less leaf showing to get infected. Worth a try if you can.

NEXT WORKING PARTY - MAY 14th
The next working party will be at 10 o'clock on Sunday 14th May
The committee is seeking the help of allotmenteers to deal with various jobs around the site that will be for the general good. If you can spare an hour or two with your help we can achieve much!
A group of volunteers can easily deal with some jobs which would take an individual committee member hours to complete!

Committee members wanted!
According to the constitution nominations for Chairman, officers and committee members should be received by Sunday 21st May at the trading hut. Nominations must be written by a proposer and seconded by another association member. The person proposed must, of course, be an association member.
If members have any motions for debate these should be proposed and seconded before handing in by 21st May.
This year the committee is slightly below strength in numbers but 5 members will still stand down at the AGM. If there are no volunteers to replace them they can be re-elected to the committee - it’s in the Constitution - but new members are not only welcome but essential! We have vacancies for three new members of the committee. It would be a very great help to have younger members of the association coming forward. The key jobs of Chairman, Plot Allocation, Web Site Manager and Secretary could stay unchanged unless someone has a burning desire to take over. We have just elected a new Treasurer.
John Batchelor volunteered to be chairman on a three month trial basis, has done a year and is coming back for more. We do need more, working committee members especially concerning the Trading Hut
If anyone is interested could they please inform a committee member or ring 01202 424989.
Younger members are especially welcome.
Please do not be bashful. There is a committee meeting before the AGM which anyone interested could attend.

Plot Inspections
Notice from the Committee
The committee would like to have its first plot inspection of the season sometime after 27th April.
The site is looking quite good already but there are some plots where work needs to be done.
We will soon be visited by the ‘mystery shopper’ for the Green Flag Award.

Each weekend the Trading hut opens from 10 am 'til noon on Sundays and some Saturdays.
A rota of helpers make sure everything runs smoothly but it needs more volunteers to fill the rota.
There is always an experienced supervisor/committee member in charge so you will get all the help you need.
It is a great way to meet other plotters/allotmenteers while helping everyone get a good deal, and you pick up all sorts of tips to help yourself chatting to the 'customers'.
Ask at the Trading Hut or use the 'Contact Page' to see what it entails and volunteer for the odd session (or two) - PLEASE!

As you can see from the picture at the top of the page, many of you had a great time at the Annual Summer Show. Unfortunately the two people who did most to make it a great success will not be able to repeat their work next year.
Richard Mann our Treasurer has decided that, due to his other commitments, he has to retire as Treasurer at the next AGM. He is happy to work alongside anyone who is prepared to take over while they get into the swing of things. This role is essential if our Association is to continue. Please, if you have any skill with accounts at all have a word with any committee member, or send in a message via the contact page, or any way you can.
Kay Power, who was the lynchpin of the organisation of the show, only took it on when her predecessor retired to ensure it carried on. She has done a marvellous job but is overstretched with all her other responsibilities with membership and arranging new tenants for vacant plots. Again she is happy to help advise anyone able to take over this task. The show is the one event that can involve all the members and the committee want to continue its use in encouraging vegetable growing by all levels of grower. While we follow the standard show procedures we operate them in a relaxed way so even beginners can have success. Two or three volunteers can take on small parts of the organisation with the committee's support and help continue making this the successful and fun event it has been.

A successful Sunday working party!

Sunday's working party was the most successful yet. Before it was time to start, Ron Clarke arrived and started gouging a hole through the hidden tarmac layer in the corner behind the Trading Hut so we could fix a post to rope off the compost area.
Having done that we (Laurie, Ron, John Batchelor, John Ferry and myself) cleared all the rubbish dumped beside the compost bins. It appears someone is bringing garden rubbish from outside the site and leaving it for us to clear up. If you see anyone doing it please be as observant as you can and pass any details to the committee - via the website if you like.
As well as that we cleared some of the cut branches left from the trees round the Trading Hut.
Meanwhile John and Hilary Lack started on Plot 13. They used the Association's new hedge cutter as well as loppers, saws and secateurs to clear plot 13 of the brambles and old fruit bushes so the new tenant can see the plot.
The rest of us arrived to help and, as can be seen in the photos, many hands made light work and we soon were able to cart away a heaped trailer load and then relax with a lovely mug of coffee/tea and a cake at the cafe before dumping the waste with help from Steve

Summer Show Report - finally!
It has been a long time coming but here is a report on our very successful 2016 Annual Summer Show.
After lots of work by Kay Power and quite a few helpers, not all on the committee, Saturday August 13th dawned fine and sunny. The gazebos had been hauled out, set up and patched up. Tables on loan from Stanpit Village Hall were transported and arranged inside and an extra gazebo, loaned to us courtesy of John Ferry, arranged in front of the cafe. Envelopes containing the prize money, class labels and judge's prize tickets were printed and sorted ready for use and the raffle set up and supervised by Richard Humphries.
Exhibitors arrived and were issued with numbers and plates for their exhibits and gradually the marquee filled with produce. Once again the tables were filled, and in some categories over-filled with exhibits so plates had to be rearranged to fit the space. Only a couple of classes had no entries and there were very few single entries in the class.
Finally at just before 11am the RHA judge David Bassil and his wife arrived and everyone left the marquee while they were left to make their deliberations.
However, there was a seemingly endless supply of drinks and cakes at the cafe and many members stayed to gossip and compare notes. Eventually the judging was completed and the judge rushed off to an important family celebration but not before commenting on the high standard particularly in certain classes. The tension and anticipation continued for a little time as Kay and her assistant Michelle recorded the results ready for the presentations but soon everything was ready for the presentation.
Hugh Merritt presented the prizes (hopefully photos will appear later - watch for the link button at the bottom of this entry) to the happy winners. It was pleasing to see that there were quite a few new members who won prizes.
Hugh also led the celebration of our 5th consecutive award of a Community Green Flag.

In addition 'Best in Show' went to Steve Joyce for the vase of flowers.
'Best Plot' was awarded to D & J Keeton on plot 7a.
The tallest sunflower was grown by John Lack at 3.12 metres though D & J Keeton had some chocolate sunflowers that grew to 2.7 metres.
After photos had been taken of the throng (see at the page head) and when the last of the tea and cakes had been sold, a team of volunteers soon had the marquee dismantled and everything cleared away.
The committee would like to thank all those who came along and particularly those who helped out with the arrangements both in the marquee and in the cafe.

Blight warning again - 3rd September
I have just received another blight warning for a "Smith's Period". This means the excellent conditions for blight have occurred during the last two days. Most of you will have got your potatoes out of the ground, apart perhaps from Sarpo Mira which is Blight resistant.
However tomatoes are also at risk so keep your eyes open for the symptoms of brown spots on the leaves spreading to the whole leaf and then the whole plant.
Cutting off the affected leaves can stop/limit the disease as there is no cure. Conditions have improved so you may get your plants to survive.

Summer Show - Saturday August 13th
If you missed it, the Annual Summer Show was the usual great success thanks to Kay and her helpers.
It was good to see so many there and have so many excellent exhibits on show in the marquee. It was particularly good to see new members scooping up well deserved prizes.

2016 Annual Summer Show
Our Summer Show will take place on the morning of
Saturday 13th August
Saturday 13th August
Join in with the fun and activities of our Annual Summer Show. The judging of exhibits, while done by an RHS qualified judge, is geared to normal gardeners and so even you could win a prize.
There will be lots of lovely flowers and vegetables to view, a raffle and lots of delicious refreshments as well as a chance to chat to many other 'allotmenteers'.
Hopefully the weather will bless us as it did last year - as shown by the photo at the top of the page.
With luck, we might even be able to celebrate another Green Flag Award!
If you have never 'shown' before, a copy of the 'schedule' will be available outside the Trading Hut nearer the time and will explain what is needed to put in an exhibit. It is quite possible to harvest normally in the few days before the show and select some of what you have picked, according to the rules in the schedule, and win awards.

Association Annual General Meeting
This Thursday 2nd June, 7.30pm
at Somerford ARC.
The Annual General Meeting is this week on Thursday. The committee needs your presence to approve (or otherwise) the wor of the last year, elect a new committee and express your views on how we should proceed in the next 12 months.
Come along to hear how things are progressing with the Council and the site.
While technically it is too late to be nominated for the committee there are still ways you can be helpful and volunteers are always welcome, however limited their contribution may be.
See you there!

Major works on the Track surfaces
On Thursday the tractor hired by the Association spread large amounts of the road chippings to smooth out the potholes. All the heap by the cafe went on smoothing the entrance and a large amount of the heap at the far side of the site was used to smooth the bend behind the Trading Hut.
If everyone drives carefully and slowly the chippings will bed in to give a smooth surface.
Driving too fast just pushes the chippings into ridges and creates more potholes.
The far heap of chippings is now loose and easily dug out if you have a pothole outside your plot that has been missed. Fortunately there are quite a few tenants who routinely fill in potholes near their plot, either with stones off their plot or with chippings from the heaps. It only takes a few minutes and gives you and everyone else a smooth ride.
While he was at the site the tractor driver also tidied the Horse Litter bins and finished clearing the parking bays at the end of Track 1, leaving a heap of good quality compost/soil mixture that is worth using. Please help yourself!

Track 1 turning bay work

Those of you with plots in track 1 (the first inside the gate) will probably have seen the work going on at the end in the turning bay. The intention is to replace the ground enclosed by the turning bay into parking for the plots adjacent to the bay, instead of being an unsightly dumping ground for all around. Perhaps it may also give space to have a compost bin for the plots made smaller by the turning by.
The parking bays will be prioritised for nearby plots as they are the plots that have lost ground to the turning bay.
There have been requests for a Horse Litter Bin at the end but unfortunately none of the deliverers of the material have the skill to reverse their trailers all the way down there - and there is not room for them to turn round at the end to dump material either.
Currently, the working party has spent two sessions clearing the rubbish that had accumulated there; rubbish that should have been taken to the tip by the previous owners. The heap of rubbish remaining will be taken to the tip leaving a mound of good quality compost available for use on plots. Help yourself!
Working Party Volunteer, Steve, is pleased with the result of his efforts.
This was part of the work completed on this month's Working Party (Sunday 8th May). Franco also came to help and John Lack was there as always and did sterling work in the Special Needs greenhouse and also did some mowing at the site entrance.
Thanks are due to those three volunteers.
Have done your bit for the Association?
You can offer your support at the Trading Hut, to a committee member, at the AGM (see below) or through the contact page of the website.
The Working Party is only one way you can help. You can help with mowing, serving at the Trading Hut, tidying the site, mending fences, etc. etc. etc.

Notice of the Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting of Roeshot Hill Allotment Association will take place on Thursday 2nd June 2016 at 7.30pm for 7.45 pm at the Somerford ARC, Southey Rd.
According to the constitution nominations for Chairman, officers and committee members should be received by Sunday 22nd May at the trading hut. Nominations must be written by a proposer and seconded by another association member. The person proposed must, of course, be an association member.
If members have any motions for debate these should be proposed and seconded before handing in by 22nd May.
This year the committee is up to strength in numbers and 5 members will stand down at the AGM. If there are no volunteers to replace them they can be re-elected to the committee-it’s in the Constitution-but new members are not only welcome but essential!
John Batchelor has volunteered to be chairman on a three month trial basis. We do not as yet have a full time secretary.
Doug Cort is willing to remain as trading hut manager for another year but would appreciate more volunteers for weekend staffing.
If anyone is interested could they please inform a committee member or ring 01202 424989.
Younger members are especially welcome.
Please do not be bashful. There is a committee meeting before the AGM which anyone interested could attend.

Busy Working Party - Sunday 10th April
This Sunday we had a very welcome addition to our team when Steve (Groves?) from plot 37 came to help us. My doughty helpers John Lack and Mark Merritt came along as usual and cheered us all along with their cheery crack.
We started by removing the last of the short stakes from the edge of the long horse litter bin between the middle and far track and moving the litter back clear of the track. We then banged in three posts along the boundary and tied a rope to demarcate the dumping area. This can be lifted aside so trailers can access the bin along its length and drop the litter well off the track. We temporarily tied some cheap blue rope between the posts but later John Batchelor brought along some thick nylon rope from his old fishing gear which will do a better job when we set it up.
We also banged in posts to block off the two bins at the end of the middle track and tied rope across as the access is too soft for heavy trailers. When the ground dries out we can start using them again.
We then went down the first track, right to the end where the parking bay next to plot 19 had been used as a dumping ground. We lifted out all the inflammable rubbish and disposed of it on a vacant plot, thus helping to clear some of the weeds. There is still some lovely rich compost, unfortunately mixed with rubbish, in the bay which needs removing to return it to a parking bay.
Please help yourself if you can use it; we will only have to dump it - and that will be hard work to no effect!
When it is clear, cars can be parked without blocking the turning bay.
John, Mark, Steve and John have done their bit for the benefit of all the allotmenteers on the site and, while I shall be happy to see them at the next session in May (8th), I would be overjoyed if you came along and helped, if only for one session. Thoughts on how best to spread the load are very welcome, via the contact page or email to secretary(at)rhaa.org.uk. [Put @ in instead of (at) - Cannot put in a complete email address or we will get swamped with robotic emails from all over the world!)

Are you using the right chemicals?
If you are one of those who use chemicals when you feel is necessary and you want to check whether yours are still legal you can use the following website:
If the button does not work try typing in this address:

Unfortunately the HSE website has had problems which are still being sorted so it is not an easy site to use, but with the 'advanced search' you may be able to resolve your query.

Vandals?
Apart from damage from the recent gales, there have been a couple of reports of damage and missing items following visits from trespassers - so it is worth checking your plot.
If you do find you have had visitors, please report every event to the police by calling 101. It is important that, even when they cannot solve your problem, they know there is one and increase their visits.
It is also helpful if tenants inform us - via the website contact page is probably the best way as it is easy then to pass the information on to everyone concerned.

'Helpful' deliveries!!!
Many of you will have seen the notice inside the gate about rubble used to fill potholes.
While the committee is very happy when tenants help out or bring in materials for the common good, there are problems if it is done without checking.
Unfortunately the rubble used to fill in potholes beyond the Trading Hut has already produced complaints that the remedy is worse than the problem and cars have to drive carefully over the lumpy 'repaired' surface and we may have to remove much of the material.
Then a delivery of woodchip was left almost blocking the track just inside the gate and it took much effort with raking to move the pile back into the bin.
If you think you have a way of helping out with maintenance on site, please check with a committee member, through the contact page on this website if necessary, and we will be very pleased to welcome your help and direct it to greatest benefit for everyone.

Watch out for reptiles and rare wildlife - and Save Our Site
As part of our campaign to resist a move to another site the committee would like to be able to show that we are a host to a range of wildlife. We therefore need to record as much as we can to back up our claims.
We need everyone to report sightings of any reptiles such as snakes, slow worms, toads etc. or other rare wildlife.
Please do this in one of the following ways:-
• Via the website contact page
• With an email to secretary@rhaa.org.uk
• With a note through the letterbox in the door of the right hand container of the Trading Hut.
• By telling a committee member onsite
We need to know:-
1. What it was. (snake/toad/bird/animal with brief description.)
2. Where it was. (plot number)
3. When it was. (Date and time)
The committee will keep a record to back up future evidence. Certain wildlife (slow worms, toads etc.) can mean the authorities have to re-home them before developing a site, an exercise that can be very expensive and therefore a good incentive to "leave well alone."

Working Party last Sunday 13 March
Once again my trusty team of volunteers turned up to the Working Party.
This time we had the unenviable job of undoing something we had done last year in an effort to control the Horse Litter heaps. The retaining fence on the long bin on the track between the second and third track was ineffective because the ground was too soft inside the bin so trailers sank in and got stuck. We therefore removed the fence so that deliveries can be made direct from the track. We may install a small log divider to demarcate the bin from the track and show where deliveries need to be put.
John Batchelor, John Lack, and Mark Merritt, joined this time by Patrick (from plot 100?) then helped me finish clearing plot 16.
There is a load of bits and pieces on the plot waiting to be taken to the tip. If you see anything you can use please take it and save us a journey.
We will be very happy if at next month's Working Party we see a few new faces. We have a long list of jobs and can tailor the task to your skills/time/strengths.
So please make an effort at least once this year to come along and do your bit for your Association.

Thanks to Don Hilton for the very conspicuous notice you will have seen by the gate.
If you know anyone who is interested in an allotment, the waiting list is very short and plots are available.
The New-Look website
To make the website more attractive and less forbidding we have altered the background colour. Everything is as it was except for the way it looks.
We hope you like the new look.
If you find anything in the website that doesn't look right or doesn't work properly please let us know either via the contact page or with an email to info@rhaa.org.uk
Any suggestions for website improvements are also welcome via the same routes or to committee members on site.
And as an added bonus, why not check out our new Facebook page. Search out 'Roeshot Hill Allotment Association' and add your comments there.

Trading Hut
Normally open Sundays 10am. - Noon
The Trading hut is (almost) always open on Sundays from 10 am. to noon.
There is a tremendous range of composts, fertilisers, treatments, netting and equipment at very competitive rates, cheaper than almost everywhere else.
Has closed for the season and will reopen at Easter.
The Cafe
When you come on site on a Sunday, stop by for a tea or coffee and a lovely piece of homemade cake and have a chinwag with other allotmenteers. You will almost certainly learn something new!
Time to renew your Subscription when the Trading Hut re-opens in January.
Only £5! At the Trading Hut Saturday or Sunday mornings.
Membership gives you the insurance you are required to have as a condition of your tenancy - and also access to the Trading Hut's discounted prices. The committee is reviewing ways of offering discounts only to paid-up members.
Mince Pies and Mulled Wine at the Cafe
Sunday 13th December
Thanks to Jane Merret, Pauline Ruck and Kay Power for organising our annual Christmas get together.
Thanks also to all those who contributed goodies to the event.
See you all next year!

Working Party - Sunday 6th December

This Sunday I was helped by my two stalwarts, the two Johns, Batchelor and Lack (in the foreground), who always seem to turn out. Jim from plot 41 joined in and did some shovelling and Hugh Merret, who was on 'Shop' duty, lent a hand by using a pickaxe to break up the heap of road-stone while the rest of us spread it to fill the potholes in the main track from the gate and past the Trading Hut. John Lack worked so hard he didn't even stop for the photo!
The work should make it better for:-
Next Sunday's
Mince Pies and Mulled Wine celebration
at the café.
If this is too heavy a job for you perhaps you could help by mowing some of the longer grass around the site or strimming down an overgrown empty plot.
If every member volunteered for one session a year we would have so much help the site would run and look perfect.
Have you done your bit to help?
Help in the shop or cafe, cut some grass, tidy a vacant plot or a manure bin and much, much more.
Just turn up on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 10am at the Trading Hut.
Contact us at the Trading Hut or via the contact page or at secretary@rhaa.org.uk if you have any queries.
Hints for January
Here are some tips with what needs doing this month supplied through an allotment website run by John Harrison, Allotment & Garden.
You will find lots more of interest on the website and may want to sign up for the website newsletter!
Volunteer needed!
Doug Cort has been organising the Trading Hut for us all for several years but he told us all that he wants to retire at the end of the year. He has since told us that he means it!
That means we are desperate for someone to volunteer to take over from him in the future. All we need is a willing volunteer as he is happy to offer training and support for his replacement even if you haven't experience in retail/supply/ordering etc.
The committee is keen to maintain the Trading Hut as one of our core facilities for members and will give all support it can but it does need a coordinator to keep it going.

The plans for the Roeshot development
If you missed the exhibition put on by Meyrick Estates and Taylor Wimpey at Somerford ARC on Wednesday 31st September you can still see the displays online on the website below.
While the plans do not cover the allotments they do allow for future inclusion of our site. It is important that the development is well planned and Taylor Wimpey sought our views on what should be built. They are maing some significant promises but also have missed out on some important issues and needed to be told.
The Annual Show
The weather stayed fine and sunny for our 2015 Summer Show and with 38 exhibitors we had a tremendous display of produce. If you weren't there you missed a treat.
Many thanks to Kay, the committee and all the helpers who worked to make it a success and all the exhibitors for making the effort. Even if you didn't win a prize you contributed to the success. The judge was very complimentary about the overall standard - so next year you may be lucky!
With luck we shall be able to publish a full report and list of prizewinners in the near future.
In the meantime, Glen, a friend of a plotholder has taken some photos that you might like to look through.

Reptile survey
Earlier in 2015 you may have found scattered round the site rectangles of roofing felt. They were part of a reptile survey. If the Ecologist, Dr Chris Gleed-Owen, found any rare reptiles it will mean an expensive rehoming exercise before any development can take place, something that may help us keep the allotments.
If you find any reptiles, snakes, lizards or newts, please take a picture or get any evidence you can and pass it to the committee.
Dr Gleed-Owen explained that all the 'snakes' that are around, adders, grass snakes and slow worms, are protected and should not be disturbed. Since they all eat garden pests it is good for the allotment if we encourage them! Just take care round adders (they like warm compost bins). They will bite if you tread on them but usually just try to slink away when disturbed.
If you get bitten, while painful, if you get immediate treatment you should soon recover so call 999 or go to hospital as soon as possible.
