Here's the note from a few days ago!

Return to collect forgotten cauliflower

I waited until the rain had definitely stopped in the afternoon to return to the plot. I soon located the cauliflower, laid in the corner of the compost bin! After removing the 3 slugs crawling over the surface I placed it immediately in the car to take home.
I then took the long arm loppers and started cutting down the Jerusalem artichokes growing behind the greenhouse. They had done a grand job of shading the greenhouse and grown really tall but the wind had stripped them of their leaves and I needed the fibrous material of the stems to start the be compost bin off. First I cut the tops off just above the netting on the 4 foot high frame that has supported them very successfully through the summer. Then, having cleared them away onto a nearby vacant bed, I cut the remaining stems about 6 inches above the ground, leaving stumps to mark where the tubers are and cleared them onto the same stack.

My neighbour, Magda, then told me of some real horse manure in the nearest 'stable litter' bin so I took my barrow and collected a load which I spread on top of the compost bin.
I then turned my attention to next year's brassicas. Removing the netting draped over the row of kale and Brussels sprouts, I finished off the weeding and staked the Brussels and tall kale. I then erected the 3 tall hooped supports I had prepared using water pipe and 4 foot canes. Using the small screw in the top of each arch to fix the top edge of the netting, I draped two 4 metre lengths of butterfly netting down each side of the bed. There was enough left over at each end for me to almost close off the end - enough to keep the pigeons out foot now anyway.
By then it was sunset and getting dark so I closed up the shed and covered the compost bin in the twilight sand left, shutting the gate to as the street lights are on but not locking it because there was another plotholder still on site.
Hopefully I did not leave anything out on the plot in the semi darkness!
